COEUR d'ALENE — Sandpoint swim faced off with Lake City in a dual meet Saturday at the Kroc Center.

The 5A Timberwolves emerged victorious edging out the Bulldogs 154-120 on the boys side and 178-96 in girls.

"I thought we did well," head coach Greg Jackson said. "I was actually surprised, I thought the boys had a chance at winning the meet ... we just didn't have the depth. We had some wins and some strong second's but we didn't have the depth in those second and third places."

Sandpoint won three of the 11 events on the boys side including a pair of victories in the relays. Jack Grzincic, Hayden Norling, Aidan Nielsen and Jake Aitken helped the boys claim first in the 200-yard medley relay. Aitken and Nielsen also helped the team take first in the 200 free relay along with Hayden Leavitt and Caleb Norling.

Caleb Norling captured first in the 100 fly and second in the 200 IM, and his older, Hayden, placed second in the 200 free and 100 breast. Leavitt secured second in the 500 free and third in the 200 IM, Aitken took third in the 50 and 100 free and Grzincic grabbed second in the 100 fly and third in the 100 back.

"The boys continue to improve," Jackson said. "They work so hard, they are so dedicated and their performance is showing it."

On the girls side, sophomore Emily Ballard (500 free) secured the team's sole victory at the meet.

Sandpoint took second in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay and senior captain Kate Bokowy placed second in the 100 fly and 100 back. Freshman Sarah Hogue secured third in the 100 and 200 free and senior Kaya Wright took third in the 50 free. Ballard also grabbed third in the 100 breast.

Jackson said he didn't put his best lineup out against Lake City because he's holding some cards close to the chest to maximize the team's advantage for districts and state.

"We had people swimming events that they are not used to or aren't ideal and they stepped up and they really performed for the team, especially the girls," he said.

There is no in-person state meet this fall due to the coronavirus. Instead, times recorded at districts will count toward state awards.

Jackson said the team is disappointed there will be no state meet, but they aren't surprised.

"We weren't very hopeful at all that we were going to be traveling down to Boise," he said. "I think it was the best alternative that they could come up with and I'm glad that they are doing something like that."

Sandpoint will take on Lakeland in a dual 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the Kroc Center.
