The Sanderson Spartans opened up the HSOT Garner Showcase with an impressive win over the Voyager Academy Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

Sanderson's record now sits at 10-8 as the program is in pursuit of its first winning season since 2009-2010.

The Spartans have now surpassed the win total from all of last season in their second year under head coach Brian Shaffer.

Voyager Academy is now 12-4, a team that despite Saturday's loss is looking like a team that could do serious damage in the 1A postseason.

Sanderson got out to an early 5-0 lead, but Voyager battled back to take a 16-14 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

Vikings big man Jonas Aidoo was active early on, as he threw down a dunk and knocked down a three-pointer in the game's opening stanza as he showcased his inside-outside ability.

Sanderson took a 22-20 lead thanks to a 6-0 run early in the second quarter, and that run continued.

The Spartans played great defense for the duration of the second quarter, holding the Vikings to just seven points and closing the half on a 14-3 run to take a 30-23 lead into the break.

That run continued into the third quarter as Sanderson rattled off six straight points to start the third.

The Vikings finally got their offense going again shortly thereafter, but it was too late as Sanderson had already built up enough separation to maintain a double-digit lead even as Voyager began to score the ball.

Kamon Green led the Spartans with 18 points on the day. Tyler Green had 13 and Xavier Jones had 10 as the other Spartans to reach double figures.

Aidoo had 14 to pace the Vikings, while Dwayne Anderson had 13 in support.

Sanderson will be back in action again on Monday at the HSOT Garner showcase against GRACE Christian.

Voyager Academy will be at Falls Lake Academy in Creedmoor for a conference game against the Firebirds.
